Track LinkedIn Ads with UTMCAP

LinkedIn Ads is a social traffic source. Below are the macros UTMCAP fills in for it, the tracking URL it builds, and what happens to cost and conversions.

Your tracking URL

This is the URL UTMCAP builds for a LinkedIn Ads campaign. Yours has your own tracking domain and campaign in place of the example — copy it from the campaign, not from here.

https://track.example.com/spring-sale?sub1={{CAMPAIGN_ID}}&sub2={{CAMPAIGN_NAME}}&sub3={{AD_SET_ID}}&sub4={{AD_SET_NAME}}&sub5={{AD_ID}}&sub6={{AD_NAME}}&sub7={{ACCOUNT_ID}}&sub8={{ACCOUNT_NAME}}

What each macro records

LinkedIn Ads replaces each macro with the real value when the ad is clicked, and UTMCAP stores it in the matching field — so reports can be grouped by campaign, placement or device.

FieldWhat it recordsLinkedIn Ads macro
sub1Campaign ID{{CAMPAIGN_ID}}
sub2Campaign Name{{CAMPAIGN_NAME}}
sub3Ad Set ID{{AD_SET_ID}}
sub4Ad Set Name{{AD_SET_NAME}}
sub5Ad ID{{AD_ID}}
sub6Ad Name{{AD_NAME}}
sub7Account ID{{ACCOUNT_ID}}
sub8Account Name{{ACCOUNT_NAME}}

Worth knowing

Double braces, all caps. Dynamic parameters work at account and campaign level only — at ad level they stay literal. li_fat_id is added by LinkedIn itself, not a macro you write.

Macros from LinkedIn Ads’s own documentation.

How conversions get back to LinkedIn Ads

LinkedIn appends li_fat_id itself — do not strip it in a redirect. Conversions go back through their Conversions API.

Set it up in three steps

  1. 1. Add LinkedIn Ads as a traffic source in UTMCAP and choose its template — the macros above are filled in for you.
  2. 2. Create a campaign with that source, and copy its tracking URL.
  3. 3. Paste it into LinkedIn Ads as the ad’s click or destination URL.

Every field of the traffic source form is explained in the traffic sources guide.
